Family Mediation

Family Mediation

Divorce Without Court — a more humane,

faster, and effective solution

Are you and your ex-partner finding it difficult to agree on child custody, finances, or communication?

Would you like to avoid court but still reach a fair and respectful solution?

Are your children caught in the middle of continuing conflict?

Family mediation offers a calm, structured alternative to legal conflicts. As a licensed Clinical Psychologist and certified Family Mediator in Cyprus, I am authorized to conduct mediation under the Law on Mediation in Family Disputes (2019, No. 62(I)/2019).

This means that, under Cypriot law, you have the option to resolve key divorce-related matters — like parenting, asset division, and financial arrangements — without going to court. The process is confidential, child-focused, and designed to foster cooperation and mutual understanding. As required by law, I have completed all official training and certification needed to provide mediation services that meet Cyprus’s legal and ethical standards.

What Is Family Mediation?

Family mediation is an organized, alternative, extrajudicial process for resolving disputes in which current or former partners address personal, parenting, and financial issues with the support of a neutral, specially trained family mediator.

Instead of pursuing lengthy, expensive, and emotionally draining legal battles, parents or partners can discuss their concerns in a safe, confidential environment and reach fair, practical, and sustainable solutions, always respecting the best interests of the children.

Who Is It For?

Family mediation is intended for:

  • Married couples or civil union partners, with or without children

  • Couples in informal relationships (heterosexual or same-sex) choosing separation

  • Parents needing to agree on custody, parenting, or communication arrangements

  • Couples facing property or financial disputes

  • Families dealing with cross-border issues (e.g., parents of different nationalities or living in different countries — relocation, child custody conflicts)

When Can It Start?

Mediation can start:

  • When the couple decides to separate, even before court proceedings begin

  • Before filing for divorce or parental authority/communication orders

  • Concurrently with ongoing court cases

  • After separation or divorce, if changing children’s needs require a new agreement

Issues That Can Be Addressed

  • Child custody & parental authority

  • Communication arrangements with the non-residential parent and extended family

  • Child and/or spousal support

  • Child’s residence & daily routines (e.g., schedules, activities, decisions)

  • Use of the family home

  • Division of assets (e.g., real estate, businesses, bank accounts)

  • Financial obligations arising from separation

Advantages of Family Mediation

Family mediation offers:

  • Faster process with significantly lower cost compared to court

  • Full confidentiality — no information is shared with third parties

  • Voluntary process — parties maintain control of outcomes

  • Respect and non-discrimination — equal treatment regardless of gender, nationality, religion, or beliefs

  • The child’s best interests guiding every decision

  • Improved communication and parental cooperation for the future

  • Reduced conflict and protection of mental health concerns for both parents and children

  • Sustainable agreements created by the parties themselves

The Role of the Mediator

The family mediator is a certified professional who:

  • Creates a safe and balanced environment for dialogue

  • Guides discussions and negotiation

  • Encourages expression of needs and emotions

  • Does not impose solutions but helps parties reach their own agreement

The Process – Step by Step

  1. Initial contact & briefing

  2. Individual meetings with each party

  3. Joint sessions with the mediator

  4. Negotiation and formulation of agreement

  5. Optional legal review

  6. Final agreement — enforceable legal document

Suitability & Limitations

Family mediation is not suitable when:

  • There is active domestic violence

  • There is untreated serious psychiatric instability

  • Substance dependency (alcohol or drugs) is present

  • One party lacks free will or is coerced
